There is not an institution in the city of Houston that celebrates the amazing history of the jazz scene, past and present. The Jazz Church of Houston is that institution. As a part of the Artist Projects at Project Row Houses, The Jazz Church will exist for sixteen weeks.
Houston is the fourth largest city in the United States. It is recognized as the most diverse city in America. Houston should also be known as the jazz capital of Texas. We have a long history of producing giants who have contributed to the canon of jazz: Arnett Cobb, Illinois Jacquet, Eddie "Clean Head" Vinson, Victoria Spivey and Jewel Brown, to list a few. We are still producing talented innovators who can be heard on many of the great jazz recordings made in the world today. Young jazz warrior like Jason Moran, Robert Glasper, Helen Sung, Frank Lacy, Marcos Varela, and Sebastian Whitaker.
The Jazz Church of Houston will endeavor to showcase the best players and masters from the scene, in a setting where the artist and music are the soul focus. It is our motto, "You can't talk about jazz in America without talking about the great Lonestar State of Texas. But, you definitely can't talk about jazz in America without talking about Houston, TX. And The Jazz Church of Houston is the place to discover and learn that truth.
The Jazz Church will serve as a space that will showcase the incredible history of the players, venues, patrons and listeners from the Houston scene.
